Ep. 23: Healing with the Joshua Trees

In honor of Earth Day, I take you with me on my recent trip one of the coolest places on earth, Joshua Tree National Park with my friend, adventure and plant loving buddy, and past podcast guest Kristen Runvik.

There are many things that can fall under the self care umbrella, and I talk a lot about the day to day simple and practical things we can do to bring self care into every moment. But it is also important to think about the bigger picture ways of practicing self care.

And to me, this is travel, exploring, and getting out in nature for extended periods of time.
Join Kristen and me as we recount our trip and share what we learned, and we even take you on a special plant hike with a local guide.

Hopefully this episode can inspire some adventures of your own and remind you that the world, the earth, even the plants blooming outside your window, are there waiting for you.

The Importance of Nature

Ah, nature. I hope you had a chance to get outside yesterday and celebrate Earth Day in some way. I kind of nerd out over Earth Day and feel the feels when I think about how important it is to take care of this spinning blue dot we call home.

And so I would like to devote this post to reiterate why it's so important for our health and well-being to connect with nature on a regular basis.

first of all, real talk about mama earth

As an advanced species that has come to assume we can get whatever we want, whenever we want, we forget that all that we have depends on the health of the planet and its various ecosystems.

But really, all of the time and energy and resources we have used to build our world could be destroyed by good 'ol Mother Earth at any moment. Just ask the dinosaurs, am I right?

She is a loving, but fierce mama, which is why it is vital to live in accordance with nature instead of forcing it to fit our needs.

Why Earth Day is Good for Self Care

This past Friday was our beloved Earth Day. It was a lovely Spring day in Fargo, so I was able to spend some sweet time outside, discovering my own backyard actually, being that I moved in during the Winter and now get to see what springs up!
As I contemplated doing something extra special for Earth Day, I realized that I'm an "Earth Day is every day," kind of person. It is part of my self care practice to be constantly connecting with nature and it's bounty.
So in honor of Earth Day, I figured I would share some ways to make celebrating and honoring our dear planet a part of your daily life, too.
 Get Outside

People are inside more than ever, and when they are outside, it's covered up and usually just to get from one building to the car. This is quite sad for many reasons, but one important one is that we are missing out on all of the valuable things we get from being outside.
One is Vitamin D that we get from the sun. So many people are Vitamin D deficient. There are also studies that show the health benefits from connecting to the ionic charge of the earth. Physically connecting with the earth's ionic charge has now become an official thing, and it's called Earthing.
